Cholera Prevention in Northern Haiti
We've all seen what's happening in Haiti. Hurricanes, earthquakes, and now a major cholera outbreak have captured our attention as this already struggling country is plagued by a series of severe natural disasters. The cholera epidemic in Haiti is bad and getting worse - as of late November, there have been over 1,400 deaths, nearly 28,000 hospitalizations, and the U.N. expects that 200,000 Haitians are at risk of contracting the bacteria in the next three months. Keep in mind, however, that cholera is actually very easy to prevent and to treat with certain basic resources. That's why Life Time International is partnering with a local non-profit, Sonje Ayiti Organization, to focus on preventing cholera from impacting 45,000 people in a community called Limonade in Northern Haiti. Cholera is just starting to be introduced to this community, and if we act quickly and effectively, we can prevent many people from suffering and death.
We have a plan and it's already underway. The plan is to educate the people of Limonade about cholera using eight locals who have been trained about how cholera is spread, prevented, and treated. These eight individuals (we call them Community Health Officers) will be shuttled around Limonade eight hours a day, six days a week, for one month to hand out pamphlets related to cholera prevention, educate people, and give out "cholera kits" that include water purification and oral rehydration materials. We have already received a tremendous amount of resources for this project. The U.N. has provided all of the pamphlets and "cholera kits" we will need, and we have received access to a bus to transport the eight Community Health Officers.
We're only missing one piece. We are seeking to raise $6,000 to fund the compensation and travel expenses of the eight Community Health Organizers and two project managers for the duration of the month-long project. The Community Health Officers were trained earlier this week and will start the project immediately. This funding is the fuel needed to get this entire project up and running.
If you empathize with the people of Haiti and want to have a thoughtful and meaningful impact on a targeted group of people, please make a donation of any amount to this project.
